TAAAC President Kristina Korona released the following statement:
“May 1 is International Workers Day. This year, the members of the Teachers Association of Anne Arundel County (TAAAC) along with union members across the country are taking action to leverage the power of organized labor to uplift working families. TAAAC members are organizing end-of-day walkouts at 40 schools across Anne Arundel County to advocate for investments in our public education system and in all of our public services which are the foundation of strong communities.
“Right now, working people are facing an affordability crisis. Costs for necessities such as food, electricity, gas, housing, and healthcare continue to increase. This is why we are taking action tomorrow: we want to ensure working families can thrive rather than just struggle to survive.
“After our end-of-day walkouts, we are joining our community allies at 11 sign-waving locations throughout the county to build solidarity with fellow workers, the families we serve, and our neighbors. TAAAC along with local Indivisible groups (Chesapeake, Glen Burnie, Odenton, and B & A) and One Pasadena are advocating for the investments needed to ensure Anne Arundel County students have the great public schools they deserve and residents have the necessary resources for a sustainable, thriving community.
“This May Day, we demand that workers’ interests are prioritized over the interests of billionaires. In this country, policy decisions continue to be made that exacerbate growing income inequality. Budgets are moral documents that show the priorities of a community. Do we choose to put our tax dollars toward wars instead of fully funding our public education system? Will we continue to have those making the very most pay the lowest tax rates in the modern era? When billionaires aren’t required to pay their fair share in taxes, local communities are forced to make tough choices about which public services and community projects will get funded and which will not.
“In Anne Arundel County, May 1 is the day that County Executive Pittman announces his proposed county budget. TAAAC members have been organizing and advocating throughout this budget season to ensure we have the necessary investments in our local public education system for increased staffing to better meet the needs of our students and increased educator salaries that will at least keep up with inflation. Tomorrow’s budget announcement will let us know whether or not Anne Arundel County will continue to make the necessary investments in our public schools that are needed to move them from good to great.”
