How many Building Reps should be elected for my school?
- “The formula for calculating representation to the TAAAC Representative Assembly shall be: one Building Representative for each 1-20 members and one representative for each additional 20 members or major fraction thereof.”
- The current BR should have received a document from the Credentials Committee in May regarding the total number of TAAAC members in each building.
How is a Chairperson elected?
- Chairs can be decided by: BR who receives the most votes, consensus amongst all BRs elected, or an additional vote once the BRs are selected.
How do I conduct a secret election?
- Pick a date for the election and request that interested candidates submit their names by that date. All members in the building are eligible to be a building rep, even if they are part-time.
- Elections may be conducted on paper or electronically, as long as the names of the voters are not collected.
- Notify all members in your building about the election date and time, sending out emails and texts to remind them to vote.
- Collect and count the results to report as soon as possible following the election closing.
FAC Elections
Elections for Faculty Advisory Councils should also be conducted in June of each year for the following school year. Follow the procedure here:
Here are the steps to conduct an FAC Election:
- Request your admin set the total number of FAC members
- The Chair Building Rep is automatically on the FAC and may be elected chair, though they are not required to be chair.
- Unit 1 members elect a majority of the remaining FAC members
- Admin appoints the rest
Alternatively, the faculty may decide by secret ballot election to have the entire Unit 1 staff act as the Council.
Example:
- Principal decides the FAC will have 12 members. It is recommended to have an even number.
- 1 member will be the Chair Building Rep
- A minimum of 6 members (the majority of the remaining 11) will be elected by faculty.
- The principal may appoint the remaining 5. It is suggested that the principal appoint the remaining members after the staff have conducted the initial election. The principal may opt to not appoint, and instead have the faculty vote in all 11.
- If the principal decides on an odd number for the size of the council, the teachers would have to elect two more than the principal appoints in order to have a majority elected.
