Weekly Update: Happy New Year!

Dec 18, 2024

Last week at our monthly Representative Assembly (RA), our Building Reps unanimously adopted an important resolution. Just as Anne Arundel County is working more intentionally to become a welcoming community, we wanted to ensure our union was on the record in support of our immigrant students and educators, their families, and all of our immigrant neighbors. We are urging the Anne Arundel County Board of Education, County Council, and the Maryland General Assembly to set forth policies that will strengthen the protections and support for our immigrant community members who are now even more under threat. Tomorrow, Dr. Bedell announces his proposed AACPS budget at the evening school board meeting which you can livestream on YouTube. If you want to join us in person at the budget hearing tomorrow night at the Board of Education at 6:30 pm to show we are paying attention and willing to take action, click here to RSVP.

Heading into budget and bargaining season for the rest of the school year, our theme and priority is to Sustain & Retain. We want to make the education profession a sustainable career with reduced workloads and competitive salaries in order to retain the dedicated employees we have in this county by supporting a work-life balance as well as respect for veteran educators. Once this happens, we will make the education profession one that more will choose which will increase the pipeline of aspiring educators and career changers who want to join the profession.

TO SUSTAIN & RETAIN, WE NEED TO SHOW UP AND SPEAK UP!

  1. Once Dr. Bedell releases his budget we need to speak in support of what we like and advocate for what we want to see amended at the Board of Education Budget Hearing on January 7 at 6 pm at Severn Run High School. The school board ultimately is the one who adopts the budget so they need to hear from us especially if we want to see them make amendments to the budget.
  2. Then the county government must FUND the school budget. In order to make sure that we get the revenue increases that we need to reduce our workloads and increase our compensation, we need members showing up at EVERY one of County Executive Pittman’s town halls. The first town hall is in District 2 with Councilmember Allison Pickard on January 9 at 6 pm also at Severn Run High School. If you live or work in this district, we need you there!

As this is the last email before the winter break, we hope you have a wonderful time away and happy holidays to those who celebrate! Keep reading for other exciting updates and opportunities.
