Right to Strike Rally and Hearing
TAAAC is a member of the Maryland Right to Strike coalition. In the Maryland General Assembly this year there is a bill that would allow us as public school educators as well as public librarians to have the right to strike. Obviously striking is a last resort. While our advocacy can often lead to positive change, we know that the most powerful tool we have as workers is to withhold our labor. However, in Maryland, striking is illegal for public sector workers. Often the worry is that strikes will hurt students, but we know that it is the chronic underfunding of public education that actually hurts them. The coalition will be organizing events and actions throughout the month to encourage delegates and senators to pass this legislation, including attending a rally at 12pm on March 11 ahead of the hearing at 1:00pm in the legislature.
