Weekly Update: Protect Medicaid

Jul 01, 2025

I just spent the last four days in Portland, Oregon at the National Council of Urban Education Associations (NCUEA) conference to meet with union leaders from around the country to discuss how we can continue to protect public education as well as stand up for the rights of our most vulnerable community members in these current political times. This week, I am being joined by fellow TAAAC members who are serving as delegates to the NEA Representative Assembly here in Portland. At the NEA RA, we will be joining 7,000 educators from around the country in this urgent political moment to build our power, foster resilience, and promote respect for every student and educator of every background and identity.
Additionally, this week Congress is debating the budget bill, and you and I have the collective power to fight back against the cuts this bill will make to Medicaid, which is the fourth-largest funding source for K-12 public schools, supporting 50% of students and 1 in 10 educators. You and your fellow union members can TAKE ACTION TODAY to protect our students as well as our neighbors who rely on Medicaid. Right now, 16 million Americans are at risk of losing their healthcare coverage in order to pay for huge tax cuts for billionaires. So far, your advocacy has already helped block many harmful provisions of this bill that would have negatively impacted working families and our students, including those targeting immigrants, collective bargaining, and labor unions. TODAY is our opportunity to protect Medicaid as well. Here are two actions you can take RIGHT NOW:

  1. Email your legislators
  2. Participate in phone banking today and tomorrow from 6-8pm

Lastly, I wish everyone a great 4th of July weekend, celebrating the freedoms that we have in this country: freedoms that we cannot take for granted but must continue to fight for each day to ensure that they continue to be afforded to each and every one of us who lives in this country!
