Weekly Update: Summer Break

Happy last week of school! We have some great county budget news to report from today. Due to the continued advocacy of your colleagues, the County Council added two amendments to the county executive’s proposed budget today to further increase school funding. The very final vote of the County Council will take place on Friday at 10 am. When that happens, NBCT school counselors will finally get the $10,000 salary enhancement like their classroom teacher counterparts. This will be a huge victory! The school counselors have organized and lobbied around this issue for several years. Additionally, there was additional funding added for more special education staffing. Now, we still have more to do to fully staff special education but the County Council members across the aisle heard the advocacy of you and your colleagues and worked to find the funds for additional positions. I know the political process can be long and tiring but you and your colleagues have proven that as long as we are relentless we can make progress!

As you say goodbye to your students for the summer, remember that you can keep advocating to improve for their learning conditions and your working conditions by getting involved with your union and improving your working conditions. Here are three ways to get involved as the summer starts:

  1. Vote on your negotiated agreement: Your bargaining team has reached a tentative agreement on your contract, which means now is the time to vote! You can read the full overview here. This contract gives nothing up, and includes a 3% COLA, which in comparison to surrounding counties facing staff cuts and budget underfunding, puts our union in a strong position. We are the first unit in AACPS to reach a tentative agreement, which means if ratified, your salary increases will start on time. Ratification is open until Monday, June 16 at 5:00pm. Reach out to your Building Rep or call the TAAAC Office at 410-224-3330 to get your MESA ID#. Check your personal email from a link directly from YesElection or visit https://vote.yeselections.com/TAAAC/ to vote.
  2. Celebrate Retiring colleagues: Are you retiring? Join your colleagues this Thursday, June 12 at Kinder Farm Park for an ice cream social from 4:30-6:30pm! Dairy and non-dairy options available. Please RSVP here.
  3. Attend upcoming events: Whether you want to help pass out resources and book giveaways at Juneteenth this month, or RSVP for our second annual Leadership Development Conference in the fall, there are opportunities all summer for you to connect with your union!

Finally, tomorrow your building reps will be voting at a special session of the representative assembly about whether or not to authorize TAAAC to move forward with purchasing a new, larger union space. Check out my latest video above to learn how a larger union space can benefit you as a union member. You can also check out the FAQs and presentation here with more answers to your questions as well as pictures of the building under consideration for purchase.
