Weekly Update: NEA RA

Jul 08, 2025

Your delegates to the NEA Rep Assembly are back in Maryland and ready to tackle the challenges facing our public schools. Over the last week, we took action to direct NEA’s actions over the course of the next year, collaborated with one another, networked with union members from around the state and across the country, and participated in a day of learning focused on building our union’s power because we knew when we came home we would be facing the consequences of the passage of Congress’s recent budget bill that will hurt working families, public schools, and students. By establishing the first major federal voucher program to cutting healthcare for millions of Americans to imposing cuts to nutrition programs and increasing funding that targets our immigrant community members, this coming school year may be harder for many of our students to show up in our classrooms ready to learn.

We’re planning to take action even before students arrive this August. At the NEA RA, President Becky Pringle gave us a homework assignment to read On Tyranny by Timothy Snyder so stay tuned for a book club opportunity. Next week, Vice President Jorge Cordoba and I will be going to Chicago for a convening of union and community leaders from across the country to plan for May Day 2026. Part of the build up to May Day will be a Labor Day event that will bring members together in solidarity to advocate for what our students, our schools, and our communities deserve. Click here to sign up for our Labor Day event. More details to follow after we return from Chicago!
