Tomorrow, our colleagues at
Bates Middle and
Seven Oaks Elementary will participate in a nation-wide "Walk-in" to protest cuts to the Department of Education. We'll be joined by speakers at each school including state delegates, County Executive Pittman, Board members, and more. In our county alone, these cuts could result in millions of dollars being stripped from Title 1 schools and special education classrooms. Nearly 500 Unit 1 positions are funded with federal dollars. These threats could mean larger class sizes, decreased support, and fewer opportunities for students, especially students with disabilities and students from lower income families.
Your actions in your schools can make a difference to put pressure on our congressional representatives, AND highlight the importance of prioritizing education funding at the state and local level. If you're not at Bates, you can participate by
wearing RED tomorrow and taking a picture with your colleagues. Text the pictures to 443-994-0509 and we'll post them on our social media!
Our Government Relations Committee met at the statehouse in Annapolis again last night for lobbying and were proud to see that our
delegates have continued to prioritize Blueprint funding, including protecting community schools, and the per-pupil funding formula for special education students. But the fight continues for a few more weeks to ensure the Senate keeps their commitments to our public schools. This is again why your actions NOW will make a difference in pressuring our local leaders to fully fund the AACPS budget. Last year, the County Executive did NOT fund the additional mid-year COLA or increased staffing positions. It's up to you and your colleagues to ensure Pittman and our County Council fully fund our budget, put our students first, and protect our public schools.
RSVP here for our Community Forum NEXT THURSDAY, March 27 at Severna Park Middle where members and community allies will speak directly with our elected officials, take action with coworkers, and share their stories.
