Respecting Educators as Professionals

Supports a national minimum salary for first-year teachers, livable wages for school support staff, a federal $15 minimum wage, and federal-state partnerships to raise teacher salaries. She also supports educator autonomy to create age-appropriate lesson plans, and opposes federal involvement in higher education curriculum.

Never met with MSEA during his eight-year term as governor and has consistently refused to fill out NEA/MSEA questionnaires to share his views on education and seek our endorsement every time he has run for office, including in 2024.
Advocating Against Vouchers

Brags on his website about creating the BOOST program, Maryland’s school voucher program for religious schools. He proposed expanding BOOST while cutting K-12 and higher education funding in Maryland.
Preventing Gun Violence

Supports universal background checks for gun purchases, preserving the Gun-Free School Zones Act, banning assault-style weapons, and a prohibition on federal funding of firearms training and gun purchases for educators.

Vetoed legislation to close loopholes and expand background checks in 2020 on private gun sales. Opposed Mrayland’s assault weapons ban passed after the Sandy Hook shooting. Vetoed legislation to require gun sellers to do more to prevent gun violence. Refused to sign legislation banning ghost guns in 2022.
Preserving the US Department of Education

Would work with NEA on future education secretary cabinet choices, looking for people with on-the-ground experience as education secretary.

Hosted Trump’s education secretary Betsy Devos for an event in Montgomery County.
Enshrining Reproductive Freedom

Will co-sponsor the federal Women’s Health Protection Act, which will protect reproductive health care. Will oppose judicial nominees who do not support reproductive freedom.

Repeatedly vetoed bills that would have protected or expended reproductive freedom as governor.
Protecting Educators' Rights and our Democracy

Supports amending the Civil Rights Act to add protections for sexual orientation and gender identity for employment, housing, and public accommodations. Opposes efforts by states to ignore the will of voters in certification of elections. Supports restoring the Voting Rights Act. Supports same-day voter registration, early voting, and restoration of voting rights for those who have completed felony sentences.

Endorsed by Donald Trump and will likely approve Project 2025 plans and conservative judicial nominations if he wins the presidential race. Recruited by Mitch McConnell to run for the Senate.
