State of Our Union

Sep 15, 2021

On Tuesday, September 14, 2021, TAAAC Building Representatives gathered virtually for the first RA of the year to discuss standing rules for future meetings, hear committee updates, and discuss the official state-wide mask mandate for school buildings.

“TAAAC’s focus has and continues to be on securing health and safety for all of you. But this is all of our union we all must do our part, to paraphrase our first TAAAC President,” said elementary teacher Russell Leone in his annual State of the Union Address. President Leone also highlighted TAAAC successes, challenges, and goals.

At the RA, new committee chairs were introduced including Colleen Walker-Good (GR), Cathy Flanders (IPD), and Chris Lerch (Special Events). Dan Kempler presented information on behalf of the Sick Leave Committee regarding open enrollment, which ends September 30. Dates for upcoming committee meetings will be posted on the events calendar as they are scheduled. Additionally, dates for TAAAC Safety trainings will be posted, starting on 9/22 – click here to register!

Here are five quick updates from the RA:

At the Bargaining Table

We are on the precipice of a historic wage package that will resolve the inequities of the step process soon, but we’re at a sticking point: the TAAAC bargaining team believe it’s not fair of AACPS to ask us for more work without fair compensation.

The impasse filing is done and we’re waiting for the designation from the Public School Labor Relations Board. When it’s finalized, we will select a mediator. The timeline for ratification is dependent on when the mediator will be able to meet.

The wage package as it stands contemplates retroactive pay to July 1, 2021.

Union, Unity, and YOU Summer Organizing

This summer, 10 Member Organizers were hired as part of a listening campaign to hear from fellow TAAAC members about their concerns, and what excites them about being part of our union in our 100th year. Member Organizers reached out to 2/3 of TAAAC members!

Employee Assistance Program Presentation

Representatives Vicky Cosby and Katie Molling presented information on mental health and wellness resources available to AACPS employees and household members. Resources are free, available 24/7, and include other support including legal and financial consultation, childcare locators, and more.
